I just attended JCrew's first ever Style Workshop and private shopping event at the Copley location. So basically JCrew's very personal stylists spoke about how to maintain a cohesive wardrobe that can translate from work to weekend and everything in between! Investing in key pieces that can mix and match throughout your week makes creating these looks a cinch.
Their main emphasis was balancing your wardrobe with proportion, masculinity/femininity, and color. Obviously with proportion you want to ground a blousier/looser top with a more form fitted bottom and vice versa. Cinching at the waist with a beautiful belt is an easy way to accomplish this balance, as well. When mixing masculine and feminine pieces, the key is to balance a menswear style item (blazer, tuxedo pant, mens style shirt) with ultra feminine pieces (sequins, florals, pencil skirts). Finally, mixing colors really is a personal preference at JCrew. Some feel comfortable mixing fuschia, coral, and a floral print while others feel more comfortable with classic color pairings like navy and white.
The take home message....personal style is just that...PERSONAL. Follow simple proportion rules to flatter your figure and then add your own twist! Fashion should be fun not a strict rule book you have to consult every time your getting dressed.
I did see a little sneak peek of what's to come for the JCrew fall collection and you can expect a lot of embellishment, intricate prints, and more color! And don't forget the major statement necklaces!
See the pictures below for some examples of how to balance your wardrobe.
All the looks above demonstrate the balance of proportion, masculinity/femininity, and color. I love that all these outfits cinch at the waist to really show off these models feminine figures. Even though the first and last look include a white menswear style suit and blazer, the outfits feel fresh and feminine.
